Learning Objectives

Ind AS 23 (Indian Accounting Standard 23) provides guidance on how to account for borrowing costs in a company's financial statements. The main objective of Ind AS 23 is to ensure that borrowing costs are properly accounted for and attributed to the periods in which they are incurred. Some key aspects of Ind AS 23 are as follows:

- Qualifying assets: Ind AS 23 requires companies to capitalize borrowing costs that are directly attributable to the acquisition, construction, or production of a qualifying asset. A qualifying asset is an asset that takes a substantial period of time to get ready for its intended use or sale.

- Capitalization rate: Ind AS 23 requires companies to apply a capitalization rate to borrowing costs that are eligible for capitalization. The capitalization rate is the weighted average cost of the company's borrowings that are outstanding during the period.

- Disallowed borrowing costs: Ind AS 23 requires companies to expense borrowing costs that are not directly attributable to the acquisition, construction, or production of a qualifying asset. Examples of disallowed borrowing costs include general administration costs and interest on an overdraft facility.

- Disclosure requirements: Ind AS 23 requires companies to provide detailed disclosures about their borrowing costs, including the amount of borrowing costs capitalized and expensed during the period, the capitalization rate used, and any significant judgments or estimates made in determining the amount of borrowing costs capitalized.
